Krisenumschreibungen
Authors: Roswitha Böhm ,Patricia Alonso Boronat ,Stefanie Boßhammer ,Markus Ebenhoch ,Albert Göschl ,Matthias Kern ,Annika Mayer ,Sarah Moldenhauer ,Romana Radlwimmer ,Susanne Grimaldi ,Jan Rohden ,Elmar Schmidt
Description: Welche Potenziale bieten Krisen? Welche gesellschaftliche Funktion übernimmt Kunst in Krisenzeiten?

Science Fiction and Anticipation
Authors: Bernard Montoneri
Description: Science Fiction and Anticipation: Utopias, Dystopias and Time Travel presents ten chapters discussing themes related to time travel, utopias, and dystopias in science fiction novels published in America and Europe between the 18th and 20th century. These themes include social progress, freedom and human rights, technological advances, and the issues of ethics, racism, sexism, censorship, and slavery. The contributors analyze novels such as The Year 2440 published in 1771, Paris in the Twentieth Century written by Jules Verne, Blake; or, The Huts of America by Martin Robinson Delany, The Amphibian Man by Alexander Belyaev, Heart of a Dog by Mikhail Bulgakov, Ashes, Ashes by René Barjavel, The Machine Stops by E. M. Forster, Morel’s Invention by Adolfo Bioy Casares, and writers of Spanish, Argentinian, English, and French fictions such as George Orwell, Eduardo Ladislao Holmberg and Leopoldo Antonio Lugones Argüello. This book notably presents their sources and influence, the accuracy of their predictions, and their relevance in our very unstable world.

Science Fiction and Extro-Science Fiction
Authors: Quentin Meillassoux ,Isaac Asimov
Description: In Science Fiction and Extro-Science Fiction, Quentin Meillassoux addresses the problem of chaos and of the constancy of natural laws in the context of literature. With his usual argumentative rigor, he elucidates the distinction between science fiction, a genre in which science remains possible in spite of all the upheavals that may attend the world in which the tale takes place, and fiction outside-science, the literary concept he fashions in this book, a fiction in which science becomes impossible. With its investigations of the philosophies of Hume, Kant, and Popper, Science Fiction and Extro-Science Fiction broadens the inquiry that Meillassoux began in After Finitude, thinking through the concrete possibilities and consequences of a chaotic world in which human beings can no longer resort to science to ground their existence. It is a significant milestone in the work of an emerging philosopher, which will appeal to readers of both philosophy and literature. The text is followed by Isaac Asimov’s essay “The Billiard Ball.”

Rediscovering French Science-Fiction in Literature, Film and Comics
Authors: Philippe Mather ,Sylvain Rheault
Description: French science-fiction (SF) is as old as the French language. Cyrano de Bergerac wrote about a trip to the moon that was published back in 1657, as did Jules Verne in 1865, this time using hard, scientific facts. The first movie showing a trip to the moon was made by Georges Méliès in 1902. In the comics’ format, Hergé had Tintin walk on the moon in 1954, 15 years before Neil Armstrong. These are just a few of the many unique French contributions to SF that rightly deserve to be better known. One of the purposes of this collection is to introduce French SF to an English-speaking audience. Rediscovering French Science Fiction... first revisits proto science-fiction from authors like Cyrano de Bergerac and Jules Verne, before delving into contemporary science-fiction works from authors such as René Barjavel and Jacques Spitz. A contribution from preeminent SF author Élisabeth Vonarburg, from Québec, helps to understand the constraints and advantages of writing SF in French. A third section is devoted to French SF in movies and graphic novels, media where French creators have been recognized worldwide. This collection explores many aspects of French SF, including the genre’s deep roots in popular culture, the influence of key authors on its historical development, and the form and function of science and fantasy, as well as the impact of films and graphic novels on the public perception of the genre’s nature.

Voices Prophesying War
Authors: Ignatius Frederick Clarke
Description: The literature of future wars is an exciting and popular genre embracing classics such as The War of the Worlds and mass-market bestsellers such as The Amtrak Wars. Here sci-fi meets the spy thriller, the war novel meets the novel of dystopia, quality fiction meets the bestseller. Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, Erskine Childer's The Riddle of the Sands, and Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 are typical in combining critical and commercial success. This new edition of Voices Prophesying War shows how the genre developed, accounts for its success, and describes how it is still changing. The first examples of such fiction are as much concerned with politics as with war. The Anonymous Reign of George VI, published in 1763 and set in 1918 describes the triumphant imperialism of an English monarch who still leads his troops into battle on horseback. A century later the first recognizable classic of the genre, The Battle of Dorking, played on the theme of unpreparedness for war, describing a Prussian invasion of the British Isles. Imaginary invasions by the French, Germans, Americans, Russians, Soviets, and, of course, Martians, followed in huge numbers. Throughout the nineteenth century novelists wrote with increasing sophistication on the technology of war; often, as in the case of Conan Doyle and H. G. Wells, they were in advance of the generals and scientists, and their prophesies were fulfilled, in terrible fashion, by two world wars. Since the Second World War American authors have come to the fore, and the nuclear age has produced such classics as Nevil Shute's On the Beach. The Cold War has also given rise to a great many bestsellers, some, like General Sir John Hackett's The Third WorldWar, marking a return to an older theme - of predictions of war by professional soldiers. This new edition of Voices Prophesying War examines recent work in detail and includes a unique checklist of all major future war fiction (in English, French, and German) to have appeared since the eighteenth century.
