Die Autorin untersucht, wie der Bildungs- und Identitätsprozess des männlichen Protagonisten durch die Musik unterstützt wird und weist einen grundlegenden Funktionswandel des Genres nach. Im zeitgenössischen Bildungsroman wird Musik zu einem dystopisch eingefärbten Symbol für Isolation und Eskapismus bis hin zu einem Substitut personaler wie sozialer Identität.
