The New Heroines
Authors: Katheryn Wright
Description: This book explores how the next generation of teen and young adult heroines in popular culture are creating a new feminist ideal for the 21st century. Representations of a teenage girl who is unique or special occur again and again in coming-of-age stories. It's an irresistible concept: the heroine who seems just like every other, but under the surface, she has the potential to change the world. This book examines the cultural significance of teen and young adult female characters—the New Heroines—in popular culture. The book addresses a wide range of examples primarily from the past two decades, with several chapters focusing on a specific heroic figure in popular culture. In addition, the author offers a comparative analysis between the "New Woman" figure from the late 19th and early 20th century and the New Heroine in the 21st century. Readers will understand how representations of teenage girls in fiction and nonfiction are positioned as heroic because of their ability to find out about themselves by connecting with other people, their environment, and technology.

Abuse of social constructs with the help of factions in Veronica Roth’s "The Divergent"
Authors: Sarah Bukowski
Description: Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,7, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Anglophone Literaturwissenschaft), language: English, abstract: In the following, I will show and analyze the system of the factions in The Divergent by Verona Roth and its abuse ruled by the government as well as the system of the factions. I will consider how the factions interact. The relationships between and within the factions are important aspects, too. My term paper should prove that the social construct of society is abused by the government. Veronica Roth has written a trilogy of this dystopian novel. They are called firstly The Divergent (2011), secondly The Insurgent (2012) and thirdly The Allegiant (2013). My primary source for this paper will be the first edition The Divergent so that I can get more into depth while analyzing. Involving all books would exceed the frame of the paper. Moreover, I will use public journals, newspaper, and secondary literature to underline the relevance of the topic for society in recent years. I will also use the novel The Hunger Games (2012) written by Suzanne Collins in some cases to find similarities and differences in dystopian, young adult fiction literature. The government abuses its power to control the majority of the population in the fictional future city Chicago. Protagonist in the novel is Beatrice Prior who will take the main space for my citations and arguments in this paper. Her thoughts and actions represent the power and discipline that young adults can show, in this case in literature.

Foster's The Rift Uprising Trilogy. She didn't mean to, but... Teenage super-soldier Ryn Whittaker started an uprising. For three years Ryn was stationed at The Battle Ground Rift site—one of the fourteen mysterious and unpredictable tears in the fabric of the universe that serve as doorways to alternate Earths—and then she met Ezra Massad. Falling in love and becoming a rebel Citadel wasn't part of Ryn's life plan, but with Ezra there asking all the right questions, they began to decode what's really going on with the Allied Rift Coalition, and what they discovered was enough to start a civil war. When the base explodes with infighting and Ezra gets caught in the fray, he is accidentally pushed through the Rift, taking a stolen laptop—and the answers it could give Ryn—with him. Now all Ryn wants is to locate Ezra and get back to her Earth. But that's not easy when she's traveling the multiverse with Levi, the painfully guarded Citadel who shoved Ezra through in the first place. And Ryn is quickly learning that inside the multiverse there is no normal—it's adapt, or die—and the one weapon she really needs to win the war back home is the truth.
